If you translate word by word you are not gonna take grammar into account. Word by word translation is a trick to avoid. I got a good examples, how would you translate word by word:

"I bet 1000 £ quid for Italy".
I answer
"Pull the other one, it's got bells on"
You'll see that if you translate a sentence word by word from french to english it won't work.

"Pull the other one, it's got bells on" = C'est une expression, que je traduirais par "tu deconnes" ou "tu plaisantes" ou "tu n'es pas serieux".
