Hey Ness, for you it's difficult to understand for example a Spanish who speaks English ?
Nine years ago (when I was 16), I went to Poland for one month, to spend time with my correspondant.
(we have been writing letters in English for some years)
When I went there, it wasn't difficult, as we had the same level ! It was easier to understand Polish people speaking English than to understand the American !
An afternoon, we went to the cinema, to watch "Armagedon", and I can tell you that I didn't understand a lot of things ! For me, it was as if Bruce Willis had mashed potaties in the mouth :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :notstupide: :notstupide: :notstupide:

Of course, if you both have the same level in english it's easier, because you over-articulate to understand each other. but when you start speaking fluently, you less and less do the effort to articulate and to pronounce properly. This is how an accent can be really difficult.
I had a little experience in Melbourne, when I was face-to-face fundraiser. I perfectly knew my speech and I knew we had, like, 1 minute to focus the people in the street. So I was speeching very quickly, launching the key words but, most of the time, people were like "what? what? what is your accent?".
it works in the other way around, as you can see. :happy:

well, actually, I would strongly advise a "shit" job if you're not fluent cuz you learn a lot.

and you know, I have done all the shittiest job in australia, even housekeeper. Sometimes, it can lower your self esteem, but now i don't care. When you need money, a job is a job.

That's not a question of esteem or something else but I'm not sure that being housekeeper will probably be too "hard" for me. Even if I agree with your opinion, I will do the best to find a interested job, so as to live there as longer as possible !

I've been dating a girl for 2 months now and the entire time she's said perhaps 10 sentences to me in English. It isn't due to a lack of ability either. She can watch a movie in English without subtitles, read an English book, and even go to an English-language theater. During the day she occasionally speaks to English speakers in her job. Well, learning a language is not like that. It is a very gradual process and sometimes you won't even realize that you're actually learning as said Nesscafe above. There's no magic moment where you just understand everything. Each day you pick up a few more words, improve your accent a little, improve your grammar, get more confident speaking, etc. In fact, the only time you'll realize how much you are advanced is when you ll start to speak to your mates who will say to you that you've improved quite a bit.

You can't improve your english in working as waitress. Cos the local people don't do these kinds of job. You'll be surronded by expats. Your english won't really progress.
