A lack of skilled labour could limit the availability of new houses, a leading indutry commentator has said. Kate Baker, author of a recent Treasury report into shortages in the housing market and a member of the bank of england's Monetary Policy Commitee, reitared her concerns about labour shortages in the housing indusrty at the building societies association annual meeting in Manchester. Ms Baker , who published her report in March, said that problems in the industry were exacerbated by a lack of the training opportunities for workers.
She said there were not enough college places for students to learn trades . There were " notorious shortage " in places for plumbers , she said Mrs Baker added that it was difficult for worker to gain on- site experience , especially on sites run by smaller building companies. However , the UK was not alone in its predicament. She said that it was " not unusual" for countries which had experienced a housing boom to be short of labour. Mrs Baker said that the UK was artificially restricting housing supply but the problems should disappear once more money was spent on housing. In her report. Ms Barker said that the construction industry was perceived as lacking investment in skills. She challenged it on spend more mon training it workers and to concentrate on better customer service.
