I think that english language is important for some people (in job, at home...); but other people can not to use english language every day. The problem is that english teacher use english text to explain the language whereas they would have to work on the vocabulary (for example, financial terms).
The way to explain english language is, for me, not adapted at the world of work . It's so

I agree with you, studying some extracts of literature is not a good way to learn English... But I don't see the interest of learnin the financial terms when you are about 13 and do not know exactly what you want to do in your life...

English teacher should work on a daily life vocabulary when we are in junior school or in college, since it is not very efficient to know how to describe the feelings of Juliet Capulet in "Romeo+Juliet" if you are lost in London...

Of course we all need to know some things about the british and english speaking countries culture, but not as much as how to cope with situations of every days...

It's right that the way for learning english language is, today, a disaster when it search her road in london (or other city ).
Understand some general words (for this situation) and financial words (for example, to understand a text extract of a newspaper) constitute a base.

Relating to me, I learned how to answer questions without know the vocabulary and times (present perfect, preterit...) Now, I learn in first the vocabulary and times previous ( I don't know when it says "avant") to study parts of text.

It's simple, what we learn at school is not English...it's just some explanations of texts and video completely useless in the real life... For instance a friend was in London and wanted to eat a sandwitch in a SubWay (you can choose your ingredients) and when he wanted to describe his sandwitch he was completely unable to do it!

Sorry, I just corrected your mistakes :wink2:

If you want to understand a text, or only a paragraph of the text, look what are the verbs and what are the subjects of these verbs. It helps a lot :wink2:

That's true, it's just like when you are trying to pass your driving licence : at the driving school, they just give you the basis of driving.

You definitely do not know how to drive correctly when you pass your driving licence, because every conductor has his way to drive. It's all about adapting yourself to the others.

Yes I agree, I think you can't relieve on school to learn to speak a correct English. If you want to learn you must try to improve yourself by travelling in English speaking countries and watching movies in OV! That what I do and seemingly it works better than school! Yesterday I watched the third episod of the third season of prison break without any subtitle! It's hard , but when you understand it's a great satisfaction!

hello, everybody

I was just passing by and I thought : why not go on Culture Co to say hello ?

i have read what you wroteabout English (or American) movies and series, it is absolutely true. Sometimes it is very hard, particularly when the actors have regional accents, but if you don't understand everything then, it is normal. One day I was watching TV with my landlady (I was staying near Brighton), the actors had awful accents (it was a detective story which took place in North West England) and she didn't understand either... it was reassuring for me -I was a student at that time- and even now there are things I don't catch when I watch series. (Few teachers will admit that, I think but I do)

I was speaking about that with my english teacher yesterday, she told me the same thing, about accents! she said I was a good training to improve your understanding anyway

Yes, your teacher is right. And it is also good for pronunciation in the long run : you can pronounce well only what you understand well. My son, who is not very keen on working has made huge progress, only because he is a fan of Sci Fi movies and series, which he has been watching since he was 12 or 13. He started with Lord of the Rings, he watched several times because he is so fond of it, so in the end he understood it all. Then he did the same with Star Wars, and also with the Harry Potter movies, and now he can't stand dubbed films, he finds the dubbing very bad. Now he can read whole books in English : lastly he read the last Harry Potter, and he some of read Asimov's novels too... and he is first of his class in English now ! (Although I never help him or look at what he does)

Have a nice weekend ! :invis: (going away for three-four days, see you later !)

it's when you have to replace somebody who was very exceptional... "ca va etre dur de le remplacer" for example.

lollllllllll It makes me think about people who are always swearing... a foot is supposed to be dirty, so we may be talking about a dirty mouth, like, this guy is always saying f*ck or sh*t.. is he born with the foot in the mouth ?

honestly i don't know, it's just my ideas...

thank you for the idea.
